BAIA MARE – THE ROMA BEHIND THE WALL

The city of Baia Mare came into the attention of the whole world when the mayoralty decided to enclose a Roma population inhabitted block with a concrete wall, sparking accusations of discrimination. The irritation was even bigger when the city hall decided to evacuate a couple of hundreds of Roma living in a nomad-like improvised camp “Craica” on the outskirts of the city into the offices of a former mining company which was until 2006, when it was closed, the second polluter in Romania. Some Roma felt sick after the relocation, accusing the local authorities they moved them into a contaminated place.
